I have one computer with Windows XP and another with Windows 2000. I am trying to connect them with a CAT5 Crossover cable, which I know is supposed to work. On my XP comp I ran a setup for a home or small office network, and then made a network setup disk to set up my Windows 2000 comp and get it on the network. But the Network Setup Wizard doesn't work with Windows 2000. I know Windows XP comps and Windows 2000 comps can be on a network together, they have it at my school. How can I connect these two computers? Please be as detailed with your instructions as possible, while still remaining clear. Thanks.

It should work. Set them both to Statip IPs. Go to the Properties of the Local Area Connection, then click on Internet Protocol and choose Properties. Select the option to Use The Following IP Address. Set one computer's IP address to 192.168.1.10 and the others to 192.168.1.11, set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0 on both, and leave the gateway blank.
If you do not know the name of each computer hold down the Windows Key and press the Pause/Break key. From their go to Computer Name, then look for Full Computer Name. Open Internet Explorer on one computer and type \\theothercomputersname
The way mentioned here will allow you to share files. If you want to share internet go to the internet connection on one computer, right click, choose Properties, then Advanced and check Allow Other Users to Connect Through This Computer's Internet Connection. If you do that you should need to go into changing the IPs as mentioned before.

Absolutely. Make sure that all of the computers on the network are in the same workgroup for them to see each other and share files and devices. You can check/set the workgroup by going to Control Panel, My Network Places.

go to panel control-network places-hit local-need both ip numbers and it is best to run the wizard on both computers and put it on disk and tranfer to both computers. then make sure they can share files by going to the network setting in your add/remove on control panel and look for windows applicantions and look for network and make sure all that is click yes and hit reply – you might need a os disk to add these.
then after you set on the connection on the hardware and done the above it should work.
