How to improve Windows XP?

My PC became very slow after 2 years. The OS installed is XP; when I first bought it, it was quite good. Many things are installed in my system tray; when I tried to run msconfig from RUN to disable some startups, I found that many things I am not sure if I should disable them or leave them there. Thanks for any input!

windows xp eat up! much more memory than other operating systems, released by microsoft. i would suggest u to search something on “windows xp registry edit” or “regedit” and certain changes and tips on regedit would definitely boost up ur pc’s performance.
*here is a word of caution – donot run regedit untill u completely know it because it is so sensitive than even if u delete one file or try to alter it, it can lead u to hard disk crash or virus formation or parmanent disfunctioning so better take a expert help in case of regedit.

Try running Hitman Pro 2. It will clear your system of all spyware (which may be the unknown stuff in msconfig). The site is in a different language, but the program itself is in English.

    http://www.hitmanpro.nl/ – Just click download.

There are many things you could to improve speed/response, lets start with hardware.

increase memory to at least 512 if a regular user, to 1GB if you are a more than average user and 1.5+ if you are power user.

buying a faster hard drive (7200rpm, with 8MB buffer or better), could be an option although you will need to install windows again, then move files from old HD to new one, programs will need to be reinstalled and after all that you still may lose some information.

Now lets see the software side, you must defragment your hard drive(s) but do not use the defrag that comes default with windows as that one is not great, there are other options in the market such as perfect disk 7 or disk keeper, this will increase response.

Also you may want to clean your system registry every other week, there is a freeware program called ccleaner which will search for errors in the registry(common errors), and will remove the entries from the registry, I suggest to make backups of registry before cleaning it just in case. In addition ccleaner will also remove temporary files/cookies/preferences of windows and other applications, that will clean your system of things you dont need to keep around for too long, you may also change the settings to do as you please.

Registry Mechanic will do a more in depth search on your registry and can fix the errors, most of the time just delete an entry, and improve speed(although im not sure about that claim).

For spyware you may want to use microsoft anti-spyware or any other offering available on the internet, in addition you can find a utility called Hijack this!, which will scan thru your registry to determine if there are registries that, potentially, hijack your browser(s) and will also remove them.

Other stuff, you may want to tweak xp itself ie not use too many effects, microsoft offers a utility called PowerToys for XP which allows you to tweak windows XP, to improve performance I would suggest taking of shadows and animations from the menu among other things. you may also want to use msconfig to stop some processes from starting when you turn on the computer, remove all the processes you dont need right away when you turn the pc on.

there is another software called Microsoft bootvis, which examines how your computer starts up and shuts down, it will then move some files around and improve the start up and shut down speed.

remeber to always, ALWAYS back up your registry before removing entries. check your task manager before removing a spyware, that it is not running, if not it wont be complete removed. To remove spyware sometimes is good to do it from safemode as spyware usually doesnt run in that environment.

There is a ton of information on the internet about tweaking and cleaning if you want more information.
