Why does the audio echo or get garbled in my Quicktime player (windows machine)?

WindowsXP, QuickTime 7.04, No echo happens in other players (wmp, real, itunes etc.), “Safe Mode” (waveOut only) is on. I have fooled around switching audio devices for playback but none of the 3 have worked (playback through TotalRecorder, SoundMax Digital Audio, Tunebite High-Speed Dubbing).
Please answer/suggest something if you can. This is very annoying. THANKS!!
Neither of the two answers resolved the problem thus far. Any other ideas? Thanks.
